Excellencies, Distinguished Guests, Members of the Press, Ladies and Gentlemen!
Good afternoon!
It is an honor to be in this majestic and vibrant City of Beijing with you. My special thanks to the officials of the People’s Republic of China for their warm hospitality and welcome.
I am pleased to announce that we will convene World Energy Forum 2016 for the first time in the United States of America, in New York City from October 20-22, 2016 under the banner of “Securing Global Energy for All.”
This follows the very successful World Energy Forum 2012 in Dubai in the United Arab Emirates. Though it had been our commitment to convene every four years, we today also announce that in response to urgent world energy issues and calls from many heads of state and energy ministers, World Energy Forum will now convene annually, rotating national host cities each year.
I would like to express my sincere appreciation to all Ambassadors and Consuls General of the United Nations Member States who are present here at this World Energy Forum International Press Conference.
I want to thank His Excellency Prime Minister Keith Mitchell, Prime Minister of Grenada, Ambassador Denis Antoine, United Nations Development Programme, World Energy Forum Director of China Affairs, Dr. Tom Tam, World Energy Forum Asia Chairwoman Li Li, World Energy Forum Goodwill Ambassador for Asia Jade Kim, for spearheading this magnificent Press Conference.
My thanks also go to all sponsoring companies and organizations for their unwavering support for World Energy Forum 2016.
Energy is essential to the hopes and aspirations of all humanity in our civilization. Energy is the bedrock for economic, social, and human development and has a decisive impact on the prosperity and security of all nations and peoples. Yet globally 1.2 billion people are without access to electricity and more than 2.7 billion people rely on the traditional use of biomass for cooking. At a time when all humanity throughout the world is seeking a better standard of living, World Energy Forum elevates energy to the highest political discourse in nations worldwide and in the multinational dialogue. Therefore, in 2012, I proposed that basic energy access should be a fundamental right of every person who comes to this planet and that every society must honor this right. Consequently, I proclaimed October 22 as World Energy Day, which nations around the globe now celebrate annually.
At World Energy Forum 2016, heads of state and ministers of the United Nations Member States, indigenous peoples, and leaders of corporations, financial and academic institutions will come together in New York City, in a high spirit of optimism and cooperation, committed to create a world where all nations and peoples have sufficient access to energy for the pursuit of wellbeing and happiness.
World Energy Forum movement is based upon a shared belief that international cooperation for accessible, affordable, sustainable energy is a win-win for all participants. Poorer nations will become richer and richer nations will gain larger international business opportunities, all of which benefits humanity worldwide.
World Energy Forum creates the environment for international energy cooperation where global partners can sit together and have long-term alignment of goals, resources, capacities, and benefits.

At World Energy Forum 2016, with the world’s largest economies, World Energy Forum
will organize “Energy G30” to lead global energy cooperation. The heads of state of Energy G30 will meet annually at World Energy Summit. At World Energy Forum 2016, we will also hold Energy Summits of Island Nations and Landlocked Nations, those nations who face specific challenges to meet their energy needs.
Celebrating women throughout the world who are contributing to the economic, social, and cultural advancement of the human race, I proclaimed 2016 as the Year of Women in Energy. Therefore, we are partnering with the United Nations Women for World Energy Forum 2016. Our First Ladies Summit for Sustainable Development at World Energy Forum 2016 will highlight women’s role for a sustainable energy future.
Our three day world conference in October in New York City will provide an unparalleled opportunity for world leaders and experts to deliberate on global energy issues and solutions, energy policy, technology, and business as well as finance. It will also come at a time when the American presidential campaign is at its peak, as world leaders watch who will become America’s next president and what his or her energy focus and policies will entail.
We invite nations and peoples in all walks of life to join with us in this global undertaking of creating an energy-secure world, where energy becomes available for all across the globe.
